Nevada, together with California, Idaho and Montana, was one of the most common destinations for Basque immigrants in the US.  The history of the Basque presence in the western states actually has two phases.  The first phase can be traced back to the Gold Rush (1849), when some Basques re-emigrated from Chile and other Spanish American countries to California and other nearby states.  The second phase picks up in the last years of the nineteenth century and first years of the twentieth, when many Basques came out west via New York.  They worked primarily as sheepherders and in the hospitality industry (hotels and restaurants).

For many years, Koldo San Sebastián has been documenting the presence of Basques in Nevada.  The results of his work can be consulted here.

El estado de Nevada es, junto con Montana, Idaho y California, uno de los destinos más comunes para los emigrantes vascos en EEUU de principios del siglo XX. En realidad, la historia de la presencia de vascos en los estados occidentales tiene dos fases; la primera data de los años de la “fiebre del oro” (1849), cuando algunos vascos re-emigraron de Chile y otros países americanos a California y otros estados de la zona. La segunda fase arranca a finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX, cuando llegaban muchos vascos a estos estados vía Nueva York. Trabajaban principalmente como pastores de ovejas o en la restauración.
