Cualquier aficionado al béisbol en Estados Unidos conoce el nombre de Lou Piniella, uno de los mejores jugadores profesionales de todos los tiempos.
Nacido en West Tampa el 28 de agosto de 1943, sus padres, hijos de emigrantes asturianos, lo bautizaron con el nombre de Louis Víctor Piniella. Entre sus compañeros de juego, periodistas deportivos y seguidores de los Kansas City Royals o los New York Yankees, sin embargo, todos se refieren a él como “Sweet Lou”.

Tony LaRussa, another great baseball player turned manager, lived in Ybor City in his early years, but moved with his parents (his mother Oliva’s parents were born in Spain, her maiden name was Cuervo), while in his early teens, and lived in West Tampa until he was drafted into the big leagues.
