“Where there is zinc, there will be asturianos” (Spaniards from the northern region of Spain known as Asturias).  The old-timer who gave us this tip has been proven right time and time again.  As we followed the zinc trail from West Virginia (Spelter) to Pennsylvania (Donora) and all the way out to Illinois (East St. Louis), Missouri (St. Louis) or Kansas (Cherryvale), we found immigrants from that region of Spain, and in many cases, from a very specific district of that region, centered around Arnao, Castrillón where there was a zinc works. Because so many of the immigrants were from the same small area in Asturias, and because so many of them worked in the same industry in the US, there was a good deal of circulation among the different sites of zinc production here, as workers used their contacts and their work experience to move from one place to another, in search of better wages and conditions.

“Donde hay zinc, habrá asturianos” (españoles de la región norte de España conocida como Asturias). Este consejo que nos dio un anciano, ha sido probado como verdadero en repetidas ocasiones. Al ir siguiendo el camino del zinc, empezando desde Virginia Oeste (Spelter) pasando por Pennsylvania (Donora) y llegando hasta Illinois (este de St. Louis), Missouri o Kansas (Cherryvale), encontramos a inmigrantes españoles de esta zona de España, y en muchos casos, de la misma demarcación de Asturias, específicamente centrada alrededor de Arnao, Castrillón donde hubo producción de zinc. Dado que muchos de estos inmigrantes llegaron de la misma pequeña área de Asturias y dado que muchos de ellos trabajaron en la misma industria al llegar a los Estados Unidos, hubo una buena cantidad de circulación laboral entre las diferentes regiones donde se fabricaba el zinc. Estos trabajadores, usaron sus contactos y su experiencia para moverse de un lugar a otro, en busca de mejores salarios y condiciones de vida.
